Make an Explainer Video | The Full Process

My animation (motion design) process is simple and efficient:

Script - I tell your story in a clear, energetic, and engaging way

I will help you write the script so that it is direct and clear. This is particularly critical with animation. Each word must directly link to a visual so I work hard to eliminate passive phrases and ensure the viewer is connecting what they hear to what they see.

Sketch - I draw out the storyboard

This is where we start to dial in what will happen in each scene - what type of motion will happen, how do we transition between elements and if we should put text on the screen or not.

Record - We hire a voice over talent

If you want to help make your video friendly for viewers of all abilities, it is great to have options to hear the words in addition to what is happening on screen. I highly recommend voice over work! If your budget allows, I have some great talents with fantastic personality and character, and if your budget is tight, you can use my voice or someone from your team!

Movement - We start animation

This is my favorite part - bringing all the visuals, texts, colors to life with motion, music, audio and sound effects! This takes the longest depending on the complexity of each scene but we’ll work together to have a timeline so that you meet all your deadlines.

Delivery - Share your video

I can deliver any files you might need, here’s a quick breakdown of options. Keep in mind, the more options, the more it will cost as each version will require time on my end to deliver.

  • Horizontal format - this is traditional formatting for TVs and is often used by desktop users so I often put these videos onto a website, in a presentation, or on youtube

  • Vertical format - LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok looooove vertical formatting but it’s also important to think about how your users normally view your content. If most of your audience accesses your website from their phone, they might appreciate being able to watch easily from that device without having to rotate it

  • Looping GIF - Pick a favorite section of your video and I’ll create that one section to loop over and over again. These are really fantastic adds to an email campaign or to put on a website to catch the viewer’s attention

  • Full length video + shorter options - When we go to all this work to make one glorious, full length video, it would be nice to get as much use out of this content as possible. I love creating shorter versions of a video to post on social or to use in specific contexts as appropriate. So consider adding 30 second or 15 second cuts to the final delivery!
